No McDonalds or my favorite Starbucks, there is only one fast food chain in this side of the planet. I come to this place whenever I am very hungry as they are near to the factory and they serve it the fastest. After this fast food, the next best places to eat are in the hotels but they need ample time to cook dishes.
Big Rooster has 2 outlets, one in town and the other is near their main market. They serve mostly roasted and fried chicken. No rice as this is more Australian than Asian. They serve chips (potato; fries) rather. Chicken and chips are their favorite and sold not only here but in almost all eatery and markets in Lae. They also have chicken burger and no hamburgers. I will tell you later where I go for burgers.
This is based on my one and a half year stay in PNG. I hope saying that it is the only one would not get me into trouble.
One of the famous places where expats roam around and buy food and household need is Papindo Super center. It is located at Eriku. Many Filipinos buy food here than in other grocery because of the lower price compared to other grocery store and the fresh veggies. Foods and drinks are sold in the first floor.
It has a second floor where some clothes, kitchen ware, toys, gift items etc. are sold. This is where I bought my first utensils for the house.
I usually go to Papindo twice a week to get fresh fruits and vegetables. I also do not stock much meat due to the power supply problem they have. We had a time when some house made a feast as they cooked all the food they have in the fridge when they heard that brown-out will stay for long hours. It is getting better now though, so soon, I will probably will be putting more on the fridge.
Currently, I am the only one occupying Unit 23 of 212 Compound located at Markham road, Lae. Later I will be sharing with another employee as there is some more coming this coming 2009. There are 4 units that Kingston is occupying, 2 of them already are shared by 2 employees. It is a two-bedroom, 2 storey house.
We have a lawn at the back which is quite big compared to other compounds’ lawns. .jpg)
